How to Feel Natural in Photos
One of the biggest concerns I hear before a session is:
“We’re awkward in photos… we don’t know how to pose.”
And I get it—it can feel uncomfortable being in front of a camera.
But here’s the truth: you don’t need to know how to pose at all. That’s my job.
My approach is centered around movement, connection, and guiding you just enough so everything feels natural—not forced.
You Don’t Need to Know What to Do
This is the most important thing to know going in.
You won’t be left standing there wondering where to put your hands or how to stand. I’ll guide you through the entire session with simple prompts that feel easy and natural.
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s helping you relax into the moment.
Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
The best photos happen when you forget the camera is there.
Instead of thinking about how you look, focus on your partner, your kids, or the moment you’re in. Talk, laugh, move, interact—those are the moments that feel the most real.
Connection always photographs better than perfection.
Movement Over Posing
Rather than stiff, traditional posing, I’ll guide you into movement—walking, holding hands, pulling your child close, or simply shifting your weight naturally.
Movement creates softness and helps your photos feel alive instead of staged.
The “In-Between” Moments Matter Most
Some of the best images aren’t the ones where you’re perfectly posed—they’re the ones right after.
The laugh that happens when something feels silly.
The way your child leans into you.
The quick glance or small moment you didn’t plan.
That’s where the magic is.
It’s Okay to Feel a Little Awkward at First
Almost everyone feels a little unsure at the beginning—and that’s completely normal.
Give yourself a few minutes to settle in. Once you start moving and interacting, it quickly starts to feel more natural.
By the end of the session, most people forget they were ever nervous.
You Don’t Need to Be Perfect
Your kids don’t need to sit still.
Your hair doesn’t need to stay perfectly in place.
Everything doesn’t have to go exactly as planned.
The goal is not perfection—it’s capturing your life as it is right now. And that’s what makes the photos meaningful.
Feeling a little nervous about your session? You’re not alone.
At the end of the day, posing isn’t really what your photos are about.
They’re about connection, movement, and the feeling of this moment in your life.
And when you let go of trying to do everything “right,” that’s when everything falls into place.
I’ll guide you every step of the way so you can relax and just be present.
